Getting a container onto your block — what the truck actually needs

People spend weeks choosing the container and about ninety seconds choosing where it goes. The second decision causes far more grief, and unlike the first one it is expensive to change.
On a South Burnett block the level ground is frequently level because water has been putting it there for a long time. Before you settle on a spot, go and look at it after real rain, not in August. What you are looking for is where the water goes, not whether the ground is even.
A cargo-worthy container is checked wind and watertight, which means it keeps rain out from above. It does not mean it keeps water out from below. Once water is above the bottom rail it is at the door seals, and door seals are designed to shed rain running down, not to hold back a head of water. Nothing about a container changes that, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.
So: pick the high point you can reasonably get a truck to, block it up properly, and keep the doors on the side the water runs away from rather than towards.
The krasnozem country through Kingaroy, Coolabunia, Kumbia and out towards Booie is deep, soft and lovely to grow things in. It is also compressible, and it does not compress evenly.
A container set straight on that soil will settle. Rarely at all four corners equally — usually one corner goes and the frame takes the twist. The symptom is doors that used to swing and now need a shoulder, and by the time you notice it the racking is already in the steel. It does not straighten out when the ground dries.
The fix costs almost nothing if you do it first. Four bearing points under the corner castings, each spreading the load over a decent area: concrete pads, a stack of hardwood sleepers, or heavy pavers doubled up. Not besser blocks laid flat on soft ground, which just punch in. Check it with a level along the length and across the width, and shim it right before the container is loaded rather than after.
The bottom of a container is the part nobody inspects and the part that rusts first. Sitting it on the ground in long grass keeps the underside permanently damp, holds leaf litter against the steel and gives every insect in the district a covered run.
Blocked up 100–150mm with air moving underneath, it dries out after every rain event and stays sound for decades. It is the single highest-value thing you can do for a used container and it happens on delivery day or not at all.
A sealed steel box in a district with hot days and genuinely cold winter nights will sweat. Warm moist air inside meets cold steel overhead and it rains inside a perfectly sound container — which is a very confusing first winter if nobody has told you.
Three things help, in order of effect: do not shut damp material in it, especially green fodder or freshly washed gear; fit vents so there is cross-flow; and use a light-coloured roof if you have the choice, because it swings less. If you are storing anything genuinely moisture-sensitive, put a couple of desiccant tubs in and check them.
Steel conducts. On a 38-degree Kingaroy afternoon a closed container is hotter inside than out, and that matters for chemical, for anything with a rated storage temperature and for anyone working in it. Ventilation, a shaded aspect and a light colour all reduce it, and none of them make it cool. If the contents need a temperature, they need insulation or refrigeration, not a standard box.
The related point, since this is bushfire country as much as it is farming country: a container is not a fire refuge and should never be treated as one. Steel gets extremely hot, the timber floor and the door seals will burn, and there is no ventilation to speak of. Keep the surrounds clear for the same reason you keep them clear around a shed, and have a fire plan that does not involve a container.
Stand where the truck will stand, then stand where you will stand every day with your hands full. Doors want to face the way you approach from, they want room to swing a full 270 degrees back against the sides, and they do not want to face the prevailing weather if you can help it. Getting this wrong means paying for a second lift to turn it, which is the most avoidable invoice in the business.
