Where the maths turns over
Under about a year, hire is usually in front. Nothing is tied up, and at the end you hand it back rather than trying to sell it.
Past two years, buying wins clearly, and it wins harder than the raw figures suggest, because a well-bought used unit resells for most of what you paid. On a working property where the need is permanent — fertiliser, chemical, workshop overflow — that is not a close decision.
In between depends on whether the work is contracted or rolling. Ring and we will do the sums with you, including on the occasions where the answer costs us the sale. Hire rates are ex GST and exclude delivery and collection, which are quoted separately because they depend on the address and the access.
Three things to sort before the truck comes
Which way the doors face
Decide before delivery, not after. A hire unit facing the wrong way is a second lift to spin, and that is the most avoidable invoice in the business. Stand where you will stand every day with your hands full, and face the doors that way.
How it is blocked up
Four bearing points under the corner castings, level along the length and across the width. On red soil this is what keeps the frame square so the doors keep closing. It takes ten minutes and it happens on delivery day or not at all.
What you shut inside it
Do not load damp material and seal it, particularly green fodder or freshly washed gear. Hot days and cold nights make a sealed steel box sweat, and condensation in a closed container will do more damage over a season than the weather outside it would.

What does container hire cost?
A 20ft starts from $27 a week, ex GST. Delivery and collection are quoted separately because they depend on the address and the access. Longer commitments come down; a short hire onto a difficult site does not.
How long is the minimum hire?
Short terms are fine and the practical minimum is usually set by the cost of getting the unit there and back rather than by a contract. On a job of a few weeks, ask for both numbers — hired and bought — because the delivery is the same either way and the comparison sometimes surprises people.
Is a hire unit watertight?
Hire units are supplied cargo-worthy and are checked wind and watertight before they go out, and they stay that way for the hire. As-is grade is a sale-only proposition; we do not hire out units that are not sold watertight.
What happens if I want to keep it?
Tell us and we will talk about a buy-out rather than starting the process again. Paying to collect a container and then paying to deliver a nearly identical one is a waste of everybody's money.
What do I need to leave for the collection?
The same access we needed to deliver it. This catches people out more than anything else in hire — a fence, a slab, a new garden bed or a shed built around a container between delivery and collection turns a routine pick-up into a crane job. If the site has changed, tell us before the collection is booked.
